Umbrella streets didn’t start in Dublin. The phenomenon has gained popularity all over the world in recent years. You can find them all over the world, from Quebec in Canada to Lisbon in Portugal. This project began in Águeda in 2012 and was called the “Umbrella Sky Project.” The goal is simple: to bring colour and protection to public areas. A nice idea, right?

There are a couple of other cities in Ireland that have colourful umbrellas hanging, including Enniscorthy in Wexford.

The street of umbrellas is situated in Dublin city centre at 34 Anne’s Lane. It’s pretty close to the popular shopping street, Grafton Street. Below you can find the exact directions.

  • Begin your journey at the bottom of Grafton Street and walk for about 5 minutes until you come to a crossroads where you should be able to see John Brereton Jewellers on the left-hand side.
  • Take the left turn and walk down South Anne Street for 2 minutes.
  • Walk until you come to Xian Asian Street Food and take the right turn after that.
  • You should now be able to see the stunning umbrella display.

Alternatively, you can type in Zozimus Bar and Restaurant in Dublin 2 on Google Maps and it will take you to the umbrella installation. Pop in while you’re there and grab yourself a drink and a bite to eat. The cocktails served are to die for.

What Does Anne’s Lane Look Like?

Anne’s Lane is an adorable street of brightly coloured umbrellas hanging high in the sky. Some tourists have, in the past, run there for some cover from the heavy rainfall that the Irish capital is known for. What was once a hidden gem is quickly becoming one of the most popular Instagrammable spots where you can find locals and tourists battling it out to get the perfect shot.

I visited the lane a couple of times before it got popular, I had the place to myself and it was great for photos, whereas now it gets a little bit more attention. Thankfully, it doesn’t get as mobbed as the major attractions like the Guinness Storehouse.

How Long Should You Spend At Anne’s Lane In Dublin?

I’d recommend you spend about half an hour when you get to umbrella street. With that time, you can stop and admire them, get a selfie or two with the lane a few times, and then explore the area.

When Is The Best Time To Go And See The Umbrellas?

It’s always hard to find the perfect time to visit an attraction. If you make your way over there as early as possible, 7 am or 8 am, you’ll be guaranteed to have the place to yourself as the restaurant beside it won’t be open, so people won’t be coming and going.
